History of Training College

Introduction

NHMP Training College

National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) began operations on November 26, 1997, focusing on the newly constructed M-2 motorway. To ensure alignment with international standards, the NHMP Training Wing started its first training in May 1997 at the Police Training College Sihala, in collaboration with the National Police Academy (NPA). British trainers were brought in to prepare master trainers to update NHMP personnel on modern operating and enforcement procedures, including traffic management, accident response, and challan issuance.

Established since May 12, 2002

Initial Training Phases and Camp Establishment

After the initial training, master trainers taught 250 officers from various provincial police forces. In March 1998, a training camp was established at NHMP Lines HQs in Islamabad to train new officers. By 1999, the camp had moved to Chakri and operated independently. Between 1999 and 2002, the training wing conducted Basic Motorway Police Orientation Courses and refresher courses, training 213 officers in the former and 285 in the latter. Due to increased demand, the camp moved to Sheikhupura in May 2002 and officially became the NHMP Training Center on August 10, 2004.

Growth and Upgrades

The relocation to Sheikhupura marked significant progress, with the Training Center expanding its course offerings to include Promotional, Drill, Commando, and Capacity Building courses. On September 8, 2011, the Training Center was upgraded to a Training College, with the Commandant’s rank elevated from SP/SSP to DIG. The introduction of the Advanced Class Course enabled officers’ promotions to higher ranks. In addition to departmental training, the NHMP Training College began offering training services to other Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) such as ICT Police, AJ&K Police, FIA, Ring Road Police, KPK Police, and Balochistan Police, fostering bilateral cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Expanded Services and Current Contributions

Today, NHMP Training College in Sheikhupura not only fulfills departmental training needs but also serves the public and private sectors with Pre/Post Services and Capacity Building Courses. The college has developed specialized courses for private organizations to train their drivers and executive officers in road safety. It continues to play a crucial role in producing skilled and responsible drivers, demonstrating its commitment to NHMP and broader community safety initiatives.
